Strootman: “It was time to make my next step.”

Kevin Strootman spoke today at a press conference for the first time as a new Marseille player. These are his words:

Why have you left Roma and chosen Marseille?
It’s a really big club, it’s a big challenge. I’m very happy to be here. I spoke with the president, technical director, and the manager about what they want to achieve. I’m behind them and want to achieve the goals. I’m happy to be here, that’s all I can say.

You reunite with Rudi Garcia.
Of course, he’s been special for me in my football career. He brought me Rome and brought me here to Olympique Marseille. I talked to him about the system and I hope he’s still happy with me in two or four years time. That’s important for me, you have to play well for a manager.

Did you leave Roma due to the arrival of Nzonzi?
It was not about a player coming so I had to leave, they have bought many players – that is normal at a big club. There’s many players here, competition is good. It was a good five years but it was time to move on. It was my time to make my next step. I like the challenge, I’m going to a big club with great fans. For example, I spoke to Benatia about this club and he told me great things. The club gave me a very special feeling and that’s why I decided to join. I have a great feeling.
