Champions League draw reaction

This morning, we learned about Roma’s quarterfinal fate. Luck would be against the Giallorossi as they were drawn with Barcelona. A somewhat familiar opponent, this draw will definitely be one of if not the most difficult fixtures the Giallorossi will have this year. Having such an amazing team with the likes of Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembele, Andres Iniesta and Samuel Umtiti among the many great players they have should cause any fan to be filled with dread. While it would have been better if they had drawn against a different team such as Liverpool or Sevilla to increase our chances of advancing, I am somewhat optimistic about the match.

Roma is nowhere near Barcelona’s quality, yet the way Eusebio Di Francesco has managed this team has instilled hope in me.  He has me believing in this Roma for once instead of dreading of becoming another meme for European football. Unlike his predecessors, Di Francesco seems to have a knack for the Champions League even though this is his first season managing a team in the competition. He was able to beat or draw against Atletico de Madrid and Chelsea, two of Europe’s biggest teams, and finish first in what many would say was a Group of Death. He also has lead us to our first quarterfinal appearance since Spalletti did a decade ago. I trust Di Francesco to adapt his tactics to Barcelona and at the very least avoid a overwhelming defeat.

Whether or not Roma advance to the semifinals, this season’s Champions League campaign has been a fairytale. From finishing first in the Group of Death to exacting revenge on Shakhtar and advancing to the quarterfinals, I can safely assume that no Roma fan thought that we would still be in the competition back when the group stage was announced. No matter what happens, I know the team will play their hearts out. Forza Roma!
