Rudi Garcia’s men scuffed an important opportunity to gain 2 points on Juventus after the Bianconeri’s draw with Fiorentina as the Giallorossi drew 2-2 with Sassuolo at the Stadio Olimpico this evening.

The match couldn’t have started any worse for Roma as Morgan De Sanctis, who is fresh off a contract extension with the club, misplayed a back-pass from Mapou and Simone Zaza made him pay and put Di Francesco’s men up 1-0. Just minutes later, the Giallorossi’s amateur attempt at an offside trap led to Zaza scoring again, as Roma trailed 2-0 going into half-time.

Roma put their foot on the gas pedal in the second half as they enjoyed nearly 75% possession in the final 45 minutes. It looked unlikely that the Giallorossi would take anything from this match after Daniele De Rossi was sent off 50th minute and Andrea Consigli was up to task for every shot Roma sent his way.

Roma’s comeback was on after Sassuolo were whistled for a hand-ball in their penalty area – Adem Ljajic stepped up to the spot and fired it right down the middle to get a goal back for the home side.

Roma continued to pile on the pressure on Sassuolo but Francesco Acerbi and Paolo Cannavaro stood tall and kept the visitors in the lead as injury time approached.

But just as it looked like Roma would be handed a defeat, Alessandro Florenzi broke free down the right flank and fired in a cross which was met by Adem Ljajic, who bagged a brace and grabbed a vital, but albeit disappointing, point for Roma.

Next, Roma host Manchester City in the capital in their final group-stage Champions League match of the season. If the Giallorossi win or draw 0-0, they are through to the knockout stages of the competition.
