It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win. Rudi Garcia’s men were able to scrap out a victory in Tuscany as Serie A new-boys Empoli gave the Giallorossi an extremely difficult time. The win takes Roma up to six points on the season as Roma enter Wednesday’s Champions League match against CSKA Moscow with a perfect 2-0-0 record in the league.

Roma’s lone goal came just on the heels of half-time as Radja Nainggolan, who was arguably the best player on the pitch, fired home a goal that bounced off Empoli’s goalkeeper Luigi Sepe, who was charged with the own goal as Roma went into half-time leading 1-0.

The Tuscans upped the ante in the second half as they turned on the jets and increased the pressure on Rudi Garcia’s men. Roma had a torrid time with Empoli’s pressing as Maurizio Sarri’s men looked like they were most surely going to equalize but Roma’s back-line of Maicon, Kostas Manolas, Leandro Castan, and Ashley Cole proved themselves up to the task as Morgan De Sanctis was tested only a few times throughout the match as they were able to hold their 1-0 lead and grab three points away from the Eternal City.

Roma meet Russian champions CSKA Moscow on Wednesday at the Stadio Olimpico as the Giallorossi will host their first Champions League match in nearly 4 years.
