Castan happy to start the new season with Roma

Roma defender Leandro Castan spoke today while at the team’s Austrian retreat. Here are his words:

What does it mean to play for Roma?
“I’m very happy to have the chance to wear the Giallorossi jersey: it’s a pleasure but also a big responsibility. I’m training hard every day so that I can be at my best. I think we can achieve big things together this year. We need to make sure we stay fit. I don’t feel any pain anymore so hopefully I’ll be back out there with my team-mates soon.”

The goal is to win silverware this season?
“No one really knew what to expect from us last season, especially as we had a new coach, but we ended up having a fantastic season and that built up our confidence. We mustn’t forget that and what we did to get ourselves where we are now. Everyone’s saying we’re on a par with Juventus but we have to keep our feet on the ground: we haven’t won anything yet. We need to keeping putting in the work on the field so that we can show we’re good enough to win trophies.”

What do you think of the roster?
“We already had an excellent team last year. This season we’ll have more games to play and we’ll need strength in every position. I think we can have a successful campaign. I don’t know if more players will join, that’s something for the club to deal with. I trust what the management is doing and I know they’ll make the right choices. Benatia? He and I formed a good partnership last season. I expect him to stay so that we can have another good year together.”

Do you miss getting the goals?
“Do I miss scoring? I’d like to score a few, yes, but it’s not easy. Last year I didn’t even go close. In any case my first priority is to defend our own goal because we already have lots of quality options up front.”

The pressure will be greater this season…
“I prefer the pressure we’re under this season than last year. We’re doing well but we can’t let up for a second: you win things by producing the goods on the field not by talking about it. I see that the team is training really well every day and when you take to the field in those conditions you’re already a step closing to winning.”

Have you spoken to Maicon?
“I called him and said I’m the only Brazilian left. He told me he’ll be coming back here raring to go. We can’t wait to have him back with us because he’s a very important player for this team.”
