Roma identify Benatia’s successor

At the moment, Roma’s only center-backs are Mehdi Benatia, Leandro Castan and Alessio Romagnoli and the Moroccan may not even remain. According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma wants to conclude all and any negotiations concerning Benatia within the next week so that a replacement can be found before the tour of America.

Eder Alvarez Balanta, of River Plate, is the number one target in the event that Benatia does indeed leave. Physically strong and very fast, he is expected to cost approximately €8 million. The only potential negative is that Balanta is left footed and Roma’s defence already has Castan and Romagnoli who are also left footed.

In the mean time, Sabatini has been blocked by Lille who are requesting €5million for Marko Basa, a man who played under Garcia at Lille for two seasons. Basa is seen as a back up centre back and Sabatini is likely to return to negotiating for Basa. Eliaquim Mangala, of Porto, costs the most. Porto currently value him in excess of €30million and Manchester City, the team most interested in Benatia, have apparently agreed a fee with Porto but are still trying to convince the player.

Roma’s plan could be to sell Benatia to City for around €30million + Nastasic and then to use the money to purchase Managala. This would leave Roma with a quartet of Mangala, Nastasic, Castan and Romagnoli, quality depth ‎capable of competing in Europe and Italy.
