A.S Roma were able to give fans an early Christmas present as the Giallorossi were able to see off Catania with a comprehensive 4-0 win. The victory keeps Roma firmly in 2nd place in Serie A but keeps them 5 points behind Juventus, who won 4-1 in Bergamo.

Roma dominated the first half against the Sicilians as they saw themselves with a 62% possession and 83% pass succession rate and were in total control of the opening period. Unfortunately for the Giallorossi, they were only able to claim an 18′ goal from Mehdi Benatia via a corner kick to put Roma up 1-0 entering halftime.

Frustrated with their inability to put the game to bed in the first half, the Giallorossi came out of the break with an attack-heavy mentality. Just 10 minutes into the half, Mattia Destro was given a Christmas present compliments of goalkeeper Alberto Frison, who fumbled away a Gervinho shot and allowed Destro to slot the ball home into an empty net.

Four minutes later, Mehdi Benatia, for the second time in the match, made Catania pay for their poor marking and slotted home a beautiful header off a free-kick to put Roma up 3-0 on the Sicilians. Roma were able to maintain possession and offer Morgan De Sanctis very little action. The goalkeeper was only called into action one time and spent most of the afternoon as a non-paying spectator.

Roma capped off the match when Gervinho, who missed several sitters throughout the day, was able to find the back of the net to put the Giallorossi up 4-0 and lead Roma into the winter break.

Roma enter the winter break on 41 points, well ahead of their position last season. The Giallorossi will face Juventus in Turin on January 5th, after the winter break.
